Skinny Trick: Coconut Curry Tofu & Rice

Posted on 3:13 PM by fjtrfjf
Hi guys, sorry for the late post today. So much is going on... I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding soon, (need I say more?) planning two events and interviews in the coming week, AND I have a friend & her dog staying with us. (Count with me now - 3 adults, 3 dogs, 1 toddler. 1 tiny house. Ya... madness.)

But my beautiful friend staying with us is also vegan, and has been inspiring me to experiment with our meals lately...

Enter: Yummy Vegan Skinny Trick!

(I was looking for something healthy and satisfying, using ingredients we already had in the house. I googled a few recipes and combined different options to come up with this. It was delicious!  Even the hubs and little one devoured it!)

Ingredients

Tofu:
1 small yellow onion
1 (14 oz) can light coconut milk
1/4 cup braggs amino acids (or soy sauce)
1/2 tsp brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp curry powder
1 pound firm tofu, cut into 3/4 inch cubes
3 heads of broccoli cut into florets

Rice
1 1/2 cups white rice
1 tsp olive oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp honey garlic
1/2 tsp curry
1/2 tsp brown sugar
2 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup raisins (up to 1/2 cup depending on taste)

Directions:

  • Slice yellow onion - leave in strips.
  • In a large heavy skillet over medium heat, (I use a wok) mix coconut milk, Braggs or soy sauce, brown sugar, sliced onion and curry powder. Bring to a boil. (At this point, begin prepping the rice.)
  • Stir tofu and broccoli into the skillet. Cover, and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium and continue to simmer for 10 minutes, or until broccoli is tender but crisp.

For rice:
  • Place rice and oil in a pot and brown lightly.
  • Add salt and garlic powder.
  • Add water and raisins and stir.
  • Lower heat to medium. Cover the pan and cook for 20 min.

Serve tofu/sauce mixture over rice and enjoy!

Perfect wine pairing:Lorenza Rose
Gorgeous label, gorgeous mother/daughter team,  and a crisp, not-too-sweet, sweet rose! The perfect pairing for this dish!

(Decorating tip: Place scarves under dinnerware for an eclectic and interesting place mat!}

Red Shorts - my wardrobe fave!

Posted on 8:14 AM by fjtrfjf
These babies keep making a repeat in my choices lately. I'm just so in love with all the different ways I can wear these shorts! I'm thrilled that I'll be doing some more vintage redesign with my partner over at Secondhand Star today. Can't wait to see what else we can come up with!
(On my way to work and looking a little sleepy... can you tell?)
Side note - this super cool purple silk top was found via thrift for $1. I took it to the dry cleaner (of course) and paid six times as much to have it cleaned! (We're still talkin' a total of $7 for a shirt I love, but the thought makes me laugh!) Earrings & Shoes - Forever21 - Red Clutch - Gifted Vintage - Belt - unknown.

P.S. - Are my bangs grown out enough to part & tuck like this? Am I fooling anyone?

What I wore to an Art Show & Interview with Josh Rosenthal!

Posted on 9:47 AM by fjtrfjf
Sometimes I really am impressed by how talented my friends are. Having spent the past decade in LA, surrounded by actors, artists, writers and the film and music industry elite, I sometimes forget to take a look around and see my pals with fresh eyes.
And every time I do that... I'm blown away.
I had the honor of attending a VIP preview of Josh Rosenthal's new series of work called FLOOD, benefiting Homeboy Industries (an organization that assists at-risk, formerly gang involved youth) at Bleicher Galleries in Hollywood. I got to watch my talented pal do his thing, and ask him a few questions along the way.
But what to wear to an art show? Thank goodness for the ease of Calypso Tunics. (I have to give a disclaimer here, that I work part-time for them in design, thus their recent, heavily-handed influence on my wardrobe - but I'm not complaining!) You just throw one on with some heels and you're good to go!
My bangs - still in that painful "growing out" phase, but I've been experimenting with my Jr High past and pushing them straight up, as high as my hairspray will allow, and I'm kinda diggin' it.
But back to Josh, this Australian-born looker (anybody see a young Sean Penn here?) fully encompasses what it means to be a full-blown artist. Not only is he on his way to becoming one of our generations most important painters, but he just wrapped the feature film, The Last Godfather with Harvey Keitel, where he dropped his signature Aussie accent to play Fabrizio the mobster with ease.
Not to mention, he's just an all around good guy. A family man and the coolest dad ever, he and his gorgeous wife are some of our favorite people in the world.
Read on to get an inside view on what makes Mr. Rosenthal tick...

FIVE FAST QUESTIONS FOR ARTIST & ACTOR
 JOSH ROSENTHAL
  1. Favorite Food? Salad is my favorite food. And its the McCathur Salad from the Beverly Hills Hotel...HMMMMM!!! Just hold the bacon.
  2. Favorite Dude? Lucius Benjamin Rosenthal, my son... He embodies complete freedom, innocence and pure happiness.
  3. Favorite Mood? Sexual silliness.
  4. Last Laugh? I ALWAYS have the last laugh!.....
  5. Last Bath? Last night with my two monkeys...they LOVE taking a bath with daddy, although its kind of a pain in the ass, cramped, and I always have to be the one that gets splashed endlessly.

Special thanks to Josh for taking the time to interview for November Grey and for continuing to inspire me in my own art and aspirations.

And ladies - check back in tomorrow guys to see how I wore this tunic casual style!

Bits of My Home

Posted on 8:53 AM by fjtrfjf
When a photographer friend asked to take some shots of my house recently, the initial thought made me cringe. (My mind raced with messy thoughts of messy toys & baby gear tucked into places that used to be clean corners of carefully placed items.) But then I realized it was a nice opportunity to savor in photographs, some of my favorite things.
This vintage mirror was a yard sale find that was floating in my family from mother-to-sisters for years. When it finally made it's rounds to me, I painted the once olive green cracked paint a crisp white. I love the way it looks against my Tiffany blue dining room walls.

This salvaged, vintage hutch was a purchase many, many years ago. It has seen me through my single years as a wardrobe for lacy underthings, with roommates as a storage space for cheap wine glasses (and even cheaper wine), and currently as a bookshelf for my most cherished reads.

There are many challenging things about living in an old Venice Beach bungalow... but having some of the original, gorgeous knobs is not one of them.

My sweet baby girl has gotten into the habit of picking a flower for me every time she goes on a walk with daddy and the dogs. I always keep it on our window sill in the kitchen in a tiny glass from a set that was my Mother in Law's.

These two objects perfectly embody the marriage of our lifestyle together. The hubs, a once wondering hippie who trekked through Europe back-pack style,  climbed mountain tops to "find himself" and collected a series of Buddha's along the way... And me, ever the romantic and vintage collector, stumbled upon this antique baby carriage from France on a ritualistic thrift shop and smile every time I see these two pieces together on our dresser top.

Mother in Law...

Posted on 8:57 AM by fjtrfjf
Yesterday was Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. It also happened to be the anniversary of the last day my beautiful Mother in Law spent on earth.

I never had the honor of meeting her, and I so wish that I did. Everyone says that my husband is so much like his beloved mama, that his sweet nature, and kind spirit come directly from her. Every time I look at a photo of her, I feel grateful for such a powerful female presence in his life, one that still lingers in our home today... in heart and thoughts and memories spoken... and what made the man I love so much, so much of who he is.

We love you Kathy. xx

Pants & Bag - Thrifted Vintage - Shoes - Nine West - Bangle - Old F21 - Shirt - Theodore Beverly Hills - Tie - Boy's

Sometimes I like to get a bit literal. Things have been busy on the work front, projects, events, so forth... so I decided to just go for it and dress as serious as I was feeling. It's funny how what you're wearing can translate into your mood. I actually got a lot done this day.

For Rick ~ Happy Father's Day

Posted on 8:42 AM by fjtrfjf
"The Only Exception"

When I was younger I saw my daddy cry
and curse at the wind.
He broke his own heart and I watched
as he tried to reassemble it.

And my momma swore
that she would never let herself forget.
And that was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love if it does not exist.

But darling,
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.

Maybe I know somewhere
deep in my soul
that love never lasts.
And we've got to find other ways
to make it alone.
Or keep a straight face.
And I've always lived like this
keeping a comfortable distance.
And up until now I've sworn to myself
that I'm content with loneliness.

Because none of it was ever worth the risk.

Well you are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.

I've got a tight grip on reality,
but I can't let go of what's in front of me here.

You are the only exception.

You are the only exception.

And I'm on my way to believing.
Oh, and I'm on my way to believing.

Getting inside a pool with my monkey

Best friend (and monkey's Godfather) in town from NY
(Performing on stage Saturday & Sunday night at the Improv!)

The inside of Chocolate Sun Studio
(The best spray tanning place around that feels like a getaway resort!)

The Same Dress for 30 Days

Posted on 9:03 AM by fjtrfjf
I love this girl. Could you do this?

Check her out here and be inspired.

She makes a very good point that most fashion blogs are centered around the newest outfit, newest shoes, new, new, new... more and more clothes. While I'm just as tempted as the next girl to consume and shop (I mean, I'm still lusting after these jeans for God's sake.) I personally think it's more interesting and creative to use what you have and make it fresh. Less consumption = more creativity.  And isn't fashion supposed to be an expression of art anyway? How individual can you be when you're just purchasing to keep up with the masses?

I'm already contemplating an item of my own that could be this versatile.

Boho Top/Vintage Pencil Skirt

Posted on 10:08 AM by fjtrfjf

This combo has been my serious go-to lately. It marries two of my favorite looks. (I recently did another version of it here) You'd think that a 60's vintage skirt (also worn here) and a seriously hippie type top wouldn't work together, but I'm loving how it mixes two different genres and plays on the proportions.

Secondhand Star - Red Suit & Missoni inspiration

Posted on 10:19 AM by fjtrfjf
I've been trying to find a different way to wear this red retro redesigned suit from Secondhand Star for some time now.  (If you don't know what Secondhand Star is, it's my vintage redesign project with friend and partner, Noa Bolozky - see blog here!)
Anyway, the suit was quite hilarious when I found it. It reminded me of something one of Will Smith's girlfriends would have worn on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The jacket was so boxy it was almost a perfect square. But the silk red pants were perfection. I've worn them solo with a tank and jean jacket, I've tucked in a boho top and belted it, I've cuffed the bottoms while color blocking... And after some tweaks of the jacket, it's been a perfect match for favorites like this thrifted silk maxi skirt below....
But I still want to find a way to wear them together!  Feeling (and as always) loving everything Missoni does, I pulled out an old dress inspired by the iconic print, and tried to make a mix work, where the jacket and pants are still a jointed getup. What do you think? I'm still not convinced. But I'll keep on trying anyway!
PS - how much are we loving that Havaiana's has teamed up with Missoni to make the best summer shoe statement ever? Wouldn't you just love to flip flop your way into the weekend with these babies?
I know I would!
